| Chickens Are Like Potato Chips... |

In ten days, my chickens will be hatching (and seeing as how I am getting them from a hatchery, yes, I CAN count them before they do!). And while I have been busily perusing plans for a coop, my subconscious was obviously having a little bit of a melt down. Because, night before last, I actually DREAMED that it was time to get the chicks and I had nothing to take care of them. Of course, this could also have a bit to do with my friend, Amelia, who got a couple of eggs from a local farm/park a month or so ago, tossed them into a cardboard box with some lightbulbs, then sent me a frantic message on Facebook last week because OH MY GOSH, SOMETHING IS PEEPING IN THERE! and she had no idea what to do because that wasn't supposed to happen. I'm suddenly having flashbacks to Jurassic Park. Life will find a way... Ahem. So, after waking in a state of frantic I'm-not-ready-for-chickens-ness yesterday morning, I packed up the kids and went to the closest Tractor Supply store.
Heat, food, and water. That about covers the basics, right? Well, except for containment, but I'm thinking that a large plastic storage container will probably work just fine. And my friend Amelia? She is looking at the zoning in her area to see if she can keep chickens. And if she can, she figures that her chick will need a couple of pals to keep it company. You can't have just ONE chicken. Which means there is a distinct possibility that I'll be calling the hatchery in the next couple of days to add some chicks to my order. I suddenly feel the need to add a Wyandotte or a Sussex to my flock.

Chickens are so much fun! They can also be stinky.
But i think your kids will absolutely love it all! Good luck!

We had chickens when I was a kid. I remember when we got the box of chicks - in the mail? - and about the same time, us kids got the chicken pox. For years I thought the two events were related.

You can have them shipped through the mail, so you probably did get them that way. Because we are *only* getting 13, it would cost me more to ship them, so I decided to drive up to the hatchery (about 2 hours from my house) to pick them up. I'll spend as much in gas, I'm sure, but the chicks won't have the stress of being mailed.
Isn't it funny what you "figure out" as a kid? I can totally see how you came to that conclusions! Funny! Write comment
